Sundance Square Commercial District: The Commerce Building, The Westbrook Building

The Sundance Square is a commercial district in downtown Fort Worth, TX. It is spread over 35 blocks. The area has retail space and office buildings in the heart of Ft. Worth. The two buildings – The Commerce Building (Sundance Square East) and The Westbrook Building (Sundance Square West) are bookend buildings completed at the same time.

Architectural cast stone, architectural GFRC and architectural precast-concrete panels are used to develop unique and yet unifying design elements in the retail, office buildings of the Sundance Square.

The COMMERCE BUILDING – SUNDERANCE SQUARE EAST

Architectural Stone for the Commerce Building

The Commerce Building is one of two new Class A office buildings, with restaurants, retail shops, a multi-purpose stage, and a pavilion at this location. This building consists of 83,000 square feet of construction space.

AAS stone panels are used on this building at the header band, soffit, window systems and sills, and a highly decorative acorn motif incorporated in the entry way and banding. The cladding design accent is realized using cast stone and GFRC stone panels with matching color and finish.

Acorn Motif - Unique Shape High End Design Element

The architect for the Sundance Square project has developed unique ornamental design of a dried acorn, which is considered to be an emblem of luck, prosperity, and power.

The AAS team used technology to design custom molds and specialized vibrant-tamp dry casting system to realize this high-end design element key to the success of the building vision.

The team worked closely with the architectural committee to meet verbal interpretations. AAS developed a master acorn of three different depths to satisfy the architectural committee of the building.

Art Deco Design

On the Westbrook building, architectural cast stone was used in the overall design of the building to be reminiscent of the Art Deco structures located in many areas in Ft. Worth.

Most of these Art Deco designs are incorporated into either over and under the panels at all windows and entrance ways.

Advanced Architectural Stone made the molds for the Art Deco designs from the isometric sketches provided by the architect.

AAS Sundance Square Case Study

The commerce Building and the Westbrook Building were part of a multi building project in the six-block plaza that was opened at the same time. AAS manufactured architectural cast stone panels, architectural precast-concrete  and GFRC panels for all of these buildings.

AAS used multi-tiered production schedule to meet milestone dates for every building in the project.

The AAS team had a dedicated project manager for the entire project to mitigate risk and delays in the aggressive construction schedule.

The new buildings blend well with the Sundance Square district dating back to the beginning of the 20th century in downtown Ft. Worth, Texas.
