FABRICATED STONE CLADDING, VENEER DESIGN FOR SMU COMMONS

SMU Commons is newly developed residential hall. The designers wanted the new buildings to blend will the overall campus, and yet give it a contemporary feeling for the buildings that are equipped with cutting edge technology. The AAS team worked closely with the customer to custom design and fabricate the stone panels used in the buildings for unifying design accent.

The building designs combined architectural stone cladding, as well monolithic stone veneer for the intended aesthetic vision.

Cladding Design

All the halls in SMU Commons have wall copings, architectural trim, stone panel entry way designs, wainscots that unified the design accent. With computerized batch plant to precisely control the admixture for the manufactured stone panels, the custom color and structural properties of the stone panels were consistently uniform.

The buildings have integrated cornice and banding designs with look of monolithic stone.

The cladding application design used both cast stone, as well as GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete).

Veneer Design

The stone veneer design in the project has effect of monolithic stone customized to maximize the views. It is designed to integrate with the glass. Close working relationship with the contractor and designer for the project was a key to confirm design feasibility. The AAS team developed custom molds to fabricate every stone piece to precise shape with stringent tolerance requirements. The stone panels color precisely with cladding panels used throughout the SMU Commons buildings.

Pilaster Design

The exterior elevation design has seamlessly integrated pilasters using precisely developed custom molds that matched stringent tolerance requirements.

The ability of the AAS team to work closely assisting with the design feasibility early in the project mitigated risk in the project execution.

STONE PANELS FOR STONELEIGH RESIDENTIAL TOWER

AAS stone panels are used on this project in various applications, as an exterior veneer rain-screen, at the entry and base of the facade, as the surround stone on all balconies, as a banding at the penthouse tower area, and extensively at the garden and pool areas. This project is an excellent example of using matching masonry materials, GFRC and cast stone.

When the structural shell of this building was completed in 2008, AAS provided cast stone wall panels for the first two floors of the parking garages. However, the building went into receivership soon after construction started, and was then purchased by a new owner in 2012. After a four years hiatus, a different general contractor was hired to complete the project along with a number of new suppliers. The architects for the project continued to emphasize the importance of the original design vision particularly of the stone panels on the balconies and on every floor of the tower. The AAS team recommended using GFRC panels for this to take advantage of the lighter weight and ease of installation. The carefully controlled batch mix of the GFRC wall panels matched the color and finish of the cast stone used on the first two floors.

The challenge for AAS team was to understand the requirements of the new installer, and to modify the stone panels accordingly. While the balcony areas on different floors appear the same visually, there was a large variation in the dimensions. The support cut-out further complicated the balconies because there were different railing suppliers with varying cut-out positons. AAS engineering team created a series of unique notch and block-outs in the panel molds in order to create custom panels for almost every balcony. The built-in, pre-engineered GFRC connections simplified the installation for the contractor significantly and allowed the project to be highly successful.

TRT HOLDINGS – PRECISE ENGINEERING AND CRAFTSMANSHIP FOR DESIGN

TRT Holdings Headquarters is a new 170,000 square ft, six-story Jeffersonian-style office building.  The project is one of several buildings located on the Old Parkland Campus at Dallas, Texas developed by Trammell Crow Holdings, one of the largest developers in the U.S.

  • The overriding design criterion of this building was to have the same style as all other buildings on the business campus.
  • Precast and cast stone was used exclusively as the material at all entries, the exterior connecting porches, hallways and veneer panels at the first floor of the building.
  • Pediments, lintels, sills, water tables, columns and roof coping comprised the remainder of the precast or cast stone on the project.
  • All entrances to the building have beautiful classical Tuscan columns. The Tuscan columns were repeated at a covered portico connecting the building to a restaurant as well.  The columns were connected with a deeply profiled trim. The precast portico runs a length of over 50 feet.

Process for Design

  • All pieces, of the same profile, were scaled to varying sizes due to different size windows, doors, entryways and breezeways around the structure.   Precise mold making ability of AAS enabled the required precision over wide range of sizes.
  • There were 7712 pieces of precast and cast stone on the project. The production was carried out using 153 different molds.  The mix design was the company’s standard formula with adjustment to a special color used throughout the campus.
  • Manufacturing was carried out using company’s computer-driven batch plant and computer driven liquid color system.  The automated systems provide the quality control to assure consistency of color and texture.
